Simona Halep, a two-time Grand Slam champion, has received a four-year suspension from the International Tennis Integrity Agency (ITIA) for violating the sport’s anti-doping policy.
ITIA found that Halep committed intentional Anti-Doping Rule Violations by testing positive for the banned substance roxadustat during the 2022 US Open and for irregularities in her Athlete Biological Passport (ABP).

“We welcome the independent tribunal’s decision after a complex and rigorous hearing process,” said Karen Moorhouse, CEO of ITIA.

“The volume of evidence for the tribunal to consider in both the roxadustat and ABP proceedings was substantial,” Moorhouse added.
In a statement, Halep denied knowingly or intentionally using any banned substance, attributing the 2022 failed drug test to a contaminated supplement. “I believe in a clean sport and have undergone frequent tests throughout my career, which have always been clean, until August 29, 2022,” she said.
