I just shared with my colleagues that I’m withdrawing my name as a candidate for the speaker designee.” Scalise cited a lack of support as the reason for his withdrawal, knowing that he would not be able to secure the necessary 217 votes in the full House. At least 10 Republicans had vowed to oppose him, according to Politico.
So what comes next? The defeated GOP Rep. Jim Jordan, who lost to Scalise on Wednesday, is expected to make another attempt to secure the Republican conference ballot. However, it remains uncertain whether Jordan has enough support or, if he does succeed, whether he can gather the necessary 217 votes. “This country is counting on us to come back together,” declared Scalise. “But there’s some folks that really need to look in the mirror over the next couple of days and decide are we going to get it back on track, or they’re going to try to pursue their own agenda,” he stated, as reported by Axios.
