The Potential Skoda Affordable EV: An Electrified Future for India’s Car Market

Skoda, the Czech carmaker, has recently established its presence in Vietnam with the introduction of their Kodiaq and Karoq SUVs. These vehicles are brought into the Vietnamese market through the Completely Built-Up (CBU) route. Skoda aims to introduce the India-made Kushaq SUV in Vietnam in 2024. During this event, Martin Jahn, a member of Skoda Auto’s board, hinted at their plans to launch an affordable EV in India.

Confirmation of Skoda’s Affordable EV for India

Skoda Auto India plays a vital role in the brand’s operations in Vietnam. The company’s Chakan plant will supply upcoming vehicles not only to Vietnam but also to other markets in the ASEAN region. In addition to the Kodiaq and Karoq SUVs, Skoda plans to introduce the Superb, Slavia, and Octavia sedans, along with the Kushaq SUV and Enyaq eSUV.

During the same event, a senior Skoda official mentioned the strategic advantages of introducing an affordable EV in India, especially considering the high demand and popularity of electric SUVs. Martin Jahn, the board member for Sales and Marketing, stated that Skoda will first launch the premium Enyaq EV in India, followed by the introduction of an affordable eSUV.

When referring to affordability, Skoda is likely hinting at a sub Rs. 20 lakh vehicle that will compete with popular EVs in India’s market, such as the Tata Nexon EV, Mahindra XUV400, and upcoming Citroen eC3 Aircross. The brand is also exploring potential partnerships to achieve their goals.

One possibility is to localize a modified version of Volkswagen’s renowned MEB platform. However, there is also the option of developing a completely new electric platform through a partnership with a local OEM. Based on Martin Jahn’s statements, the price range for Skoda’s affordable EV is expected to be between USD 15,000 to USD 20,000.

Considering the current conversion rates, this price range translates to approximately Rs. 12.5 lakh to Rs. 16.6 lakh. Given their previous collaborations regarding VW’s MEB platform and powertrains, Mahindra could be the natural choice for a partnership. Additionally, Skoda may utilize a similar setup to Mahindra’s INGLO platform.

Is Skoda Planning to Electrify the Kushaq?

The company’s aim is to develop a vehicle that is both affordable and profitable. One possible approach would involve electrifying existing vehicles in their portfolio, such as the Kushaq and Slavia. These models are based on the MQB A0 IN platform.

By electrifying existing vehicles, Skoda can potentially save on the costs associated with designing and developing a new vehicle from scratch. Moreover, manufacturing and design efficiency would increase as more vehicles share the same sheet metal. The expected configuration of a 40 kWh to 45 kWh battery capacity along with a single motor front-wheel drive layout aligns with the anticipated price. The launch of this electrified model is projected for 2025.
