New Jersey Democrat Rep. Andy Kim Announces Senate Run Against Senator Bob Menendez
New Jersey Democratic Rep. Andy Kim has declared his intention to run against Sen. Bob Menendez next year following Menendez’s indictment and refusal to step down. Kim took to X, a popular social media platform, to express his decision.
Kim, who has been serving as the representative for New Jersey’s 3rd Congressional District since 2019, cited Menendez’s statement of “I am not going anywhere” in response to calls for his resignation as the reason behind his decision. He believes that New Jersey deserves a better representative and cannot afford to compromise the integrity of the Senate.
A member of the Congressional Asian Pacific American and Progressive caucuses, Kim enjoys significant support from voters in his district. In the last election, he won by a considerable margin of over 10 percentage points. Kim is also actively involved in the House Armed Services and Foreign Affairs committees.
Kim gained national attention for his actions following the January 6, 2021, insurrection at the Capitol. He was photographed cleaning up the debris left by the rioters and subsequently donated the suit he wore that day to the renowned Smithsonian Institution.
On the other hand, Menendez has a long political career in New Jersey. He was first appointed to the US Senate in 2006, filling a vacancy left by Jon Corzine, and was reelected in 2018. Menendez’s recent indictment, accusing him and his wife of corruption-related offenses, has sparked calls for his resignation from prominent New Jersey Democrats, including Governor Phil Murphy and Representative Mikie Sherrill.
Despite the pressure to step down, Menendez announced that he does not intend to resign. He stated that he maintains his innocence and plans to continue fighting for the people of New Jersey, emphasizing his decades of success in public service.
This is not Menendez’s first brush with corruption charges. In 2015, he faced similar allegations of bribery and conspiracy, which ultimately resulted in a mistrial in November 2017 due to a deadlocked jury.
As the situation continues to unfold, it remains to be seen how Menendez’s case will impact his political career and the future of New Jersey’s representation in the Senate.
