President Biden has arrived in Tel Aviv, Israel, to meet with the nation’s leadership in a display of support during Israel’s war with Hamas. Unfortunately, his planned visit to meet with Arab leaders in Jordan had to be canceled due to a deadly explosion at a hospital in Gaza City that officials believe has claimed the lives of at least 500 people.
The purpose of President Biden’s visit was to demonstrate the United States’ commitment to Israel while addressing the high tensions in the region. However, the news of the hospital blast and the blame game surrounding it has overshadowed his arrival.
Palestinian officials accuse Israel of carrying out an airstrike on the hospital, while the Israel Defense Forces deny these allegations, stating that their analysis indicates a rocket fired by Islamic Jihad militants fell short and hit the hospital. The exact cause of the explosion remains unverified.
News of the blast has sparked angry protests in Arab nations and the West Bank.
President Biden’s visit comes after Secretary of State Antony Blinken’s grueling trip to the Middle East, during which he spent seven hours on Monday meeting with Israel’s wartime cabinet to coordinate efforts for providing humanitarian aid to Gaza. The National Security Council’s John Kirby told CBS News that they hope to soon deliver food, water, and medicine to the people of Gaza and facilitate safe passage for those who wish to leave.
The relentless Israeli airstrikes and the blockade of Gaza have resulted in the displacement of half of Gaza’s population and a dire humanitarian crisis with shortages of food, fuel, and water.
Palestinian officials claim that Israel’s bombardment has resulted in approximately 3,000 deaths and 12,500 injuries, mainly among women and children. Israeli officials report that the Hamas terror attack and ongoing rocket fire have caused the deaths of around 1,400 people, with 3,500 others injured. Additionally, nearly 200 hostages are allegedly being held by Hamas.
Currently, 13 U.S. nationals remain missing, and 31 American citizens have been confirmed as casualties. It is estimated that as many as 600 U.S. nationals are trapped in Gaza.
