Breaking News: President Biden Stands in Solidarity with UAW on Historic Picket Line

President Biden Makes Historic Move, Joins United Auto Workers on Picket Line in Michigan

President Joe Biden made history on Tuesday by doing something unprecedented for a sitting president: he joined a picket line. Addressing striking United Auto Workers in Van Buren Township, Biden expressed his support for their cause, saying, “You deserve the significant raise you need.” As reported by the AP, he walked alongside the workers outside the GM parts distribution warehouse, exchanging fist bumps and words of encouragement. In response to a question about a 40% raise, Biden affirmed that the workers deserved it and urged them to persevere.

Reflecting on his earlier involvement with UAW picket lines, Biden shared, “I’ve marched a lot of UAW picket lines when I was a senator, since 1973, but I’ll tell you what, this is the first time I’ve ever done it as the president.” Speaking for less than two minutes, he emphasized the crucial role of unions in building the middle class, declaring, “Wall Street didn’t build this country, the middle class built this country, and unions built the middle class!” The president expressed his belief that the workers deserved more than their current pay and encouraged them to persevere. In the coming days, former President Donald Trump is also expected to visit Detroit in an attempt to win over striking auto workers. (Read more UAW strike stories.)
