Breaking News: Las Vegas Raiders Terminate Head Coach & General Manager, Josh McDaniels, Following Turbulent Season Opener

CNN – The Las Vegas Raiders made a shocking announcement on Tuesday, firing head coach Josh McDaniels and general manager David Ziegler. In a statement, Raiders owner Mark Davis expressed his gratitude to McDaniels and Ziegler for their hard work but stated that the team needs a change to move forward.

Taking their place as interim head coach and interim general manager are linebackers coach Antonio Pierce and assistant general manager Champ Kelly, respectively. This will be Pierce’s eighth head coaching role, while the Raiders have had three interim head coaches in the last 13 years.

The team is committed to conducting a thorough search for a new head coach and general manager once the season concludes. The firing of McDaniels and Ziegler marks the end of a disappointing era for the franchise, which had high hopes when they were hired in 2021 after being part of the title-winning run with the New England Patriots.

Despite the acquisition of star players like Davante Adams, McDaniels and Ziegler failed to lead the team to the playoffs during their tenure. They leave with a combined record of 9-16 in the 25 games they were in charge, including a 3-5 start to this season.

McDaniels, known for his offensive proficiency during his successful stint with the Patriots, couldn’t replicate that success in Las Vegas. The team’s scoring and yardage rankings have dropped significantly this season, ranking 30th in scoring and 31st in yards, compared to a 12th-place finish in both categories in 2022.

While standout players like Adams, Jacobs, and Crosby have had impressive performances under McDaniels, they have struggled this season as the Raiders have faltered in all areas of the game.

The decision to fire McDaniels and Ziegler comes after the team’s disappointing 26-14 loss to the Detroit Lions, where they only managed 157 total yards. Lions rookie running back Jahmyr Gibbs outrushed the entire Raiders offense with 189 yards.

This is McDaniels’ second unsuccessful head coaching stint, previously coaching the Denver Broncos to an 11-17 record before being fired in 2010.
