Breaking News: Future Motion Issues Urgent Recall of Onewheel Electric Skateboards Following Tragic Fatalities

Future Motion, the manufacturer of Onewheel electric skateboards, has issued a voluntary recall of all its boards due to safety concerns.

The company has discovered that all Onewheel models can lose balance while being ridden if their limits are exceeded. This can result in riders being thrown off the boards, leading to serious injury or even death.

Future Motion, based in Santa Cruz, California, has collaborated with the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC) to initiate the recall. Between 2019 and 2021, four deaths related to Onewheel boards were reported, with three of them resulting from head injuries due to not wearing helmets.

The CPSC has also received multiple reports of serious injuries caused by Onewheel boards, including traumatic brain injuries, concussions, paralysis, upper-body fractures, lower-body fractures, and ligament damage. A recall notice can be found on the CPSC website.

“Consumers should immediately cease using the recalled Onewheel electric skateboards,” urged both Future Motion and the CPSC.

The company has sold 300,000 boards, priced between $1,050 and $2,200.

Onewheel has introduced a new safety alert feature called “haptic buzz” through a firmware update. This feature notifies riders when they are at risk of crashing.

Onewheel owners are advised to install the software update using the Onewheel app before resuming riding. Additionally, riders are eligible for refunds in the form of store credit. For more information, visit https://recall.onewheel.com/safety.
