Breaking News: Former USC Gynecologist Accused of Sexual Misconduct Discovered Deceased

Former USC campus gynecologist George Tyndall, who was awaiting trial on sex-related charges involving 16 patients, has been found dead in his Los Angeles home, according to one of his attorneys.

Defense attorney Leonard Levine stated that a close friend discovered Tyndall unresponsive in his condominium after being unable to reach him. It is believed that Tyndall’s death was due to natural causes, pending an autopsy to determine the exact cause.

Tyndall’s attorney expressed that his client wanted to go to trial to prove his innocence. The defense team plans to request the dismissal of the case once the death certificate is available.

Tyndall had been charged with 18 felony counts of sexual penetration of an unconscious person and nine felony counts of sexual battery by fraud. The alleged crimes occurred between 2009 and 2016 while Tyndall was working at USC’s student health center.

Several charges involving other women were dismissed due to their decisions not to proceed with the case. Tyndall’s next court appearance was scheduled for October 13.

The defense team had planned to argue for a reduction in bail and the removal of electronic monitoring, citing the dismissal of some charges as evidence of Tyndall not being a threat.

One alleged victim expressed a desire for a speedy trial and justice for all victims. The allegations against Tyndall were first reported in a 2016 Los Angeles Times article.

Deputy District Attorney Reinhold Mueller emphasized the trust placed in Tyndall by his young patients, highlighting their lack of awareness regarding the nature of his actions.

Defense attorney Levine argued that Tyndall’s conduct was misinterpreted as sexual following media coverage and maintained that the examinations were legitimate medical procedures.

In March 2021, Tyndall reached an $852 million settlement with hundreds of women who claimed sexual abuse. This settlement followed a $215 million class-action settlement in January 2020.

The university has denied allegations of a cover-up and implemented new protocols in response to the scandal. USC President Carol Folt expressed regret for the pain experienced by victims and hopes the settlement brings them some relief.

Tyndall surrendered his medical license in September 2019.
