In a stunning turn of events, Danny Masterson, known for his role in the hit TV show That ’70s Show, has been sentenced to 30 years to life in prison for the rapes of two women that occurred two decades ago. Los Angeles Superior Court Judge Charlaine F. Olmedo delivered the sentence, taking into account the statements made by the victims about the lasting trauma and suffering they have endured. The 47-year-old actor, who has been in custody since May, sat quietly in the courtroom wearing a suit, showing no visible reaction as the women spoke their words of strength.
One of the brave women said to Masterson, “When you raped me, you stole from me. That’s what rape is, a theft of the spirit. You are pathetic, disturbed, and completely violent. The world is better off with you in prison.” The other victim expressed that he “has not shown an ounce of remorse for the pain he caused.” She tearfully said to the judge, “I knew he belonged behind bars for the safety of all the women he came into contact with. I am so sorry and upset. I wish I had reported him to the police sooner.”
The assaults took place in 2003 in Masterson’s Hollywood home when he was at the height of his fame on the Fox sitcom That ’70s Show. However, the jury was unable to reach a verdict on a third alleged rape. Prosecutors argued that Masterson used his position in the Church of Scientology, where all three women were also members at the time, to avoid facing consequences for his actions for many years. The victims blamed the church for their reluctance to go to the police, stating that when they reported the rapes to Scientology officials, they were denied justice, put through their own ethics programs, and warned against involving law enforcement in a case that involved a member of high standing.
