Alyssa Nakken has made history once again in the world of baseball.
Over three years after becoming the first woman to join a Major League Baseball coaching staff and 18 months after becoming the first woman to coach on the field during an MLB game, the San Francisco Giants’ assistant coach has now become the first woman to be interviewed for a major league managerial position.
Confirmation came from Giants’ president of baseball operations, Farhan Zaidi, who told the Associated Press on Sunday night that Nakken had participated in a first-round interview last week. The team is currently seeking a replacement for their fired manager, Gabe Kapler. It is worth noting that Nakken, who is 33 years old, and her husband Robert Abel are expecting their first child, a girl, in February.
Nakken started her career as a standout softball player at first base for Sacramento State. She later joined the Giants as an intern in baseball operations in 2014 and was promoted to assistant coach by Kapler six years later. Upon her appointment, Kapler stated that Nakken would support the coaching staff on the field and work towards creating a culture of collaboration and teamwork.
Nakken’s groundbreaking achievements continued on April 13, 2022. During a game against the San Diego Padres, when first-base coach Antoan Richardson was ejected in the third inning, Nakken stepped in to fill his position on the field. She had previously coached first base in some spring training games and had been actively preparing for this scenario with Richardson, as confirmed by Kapler at the time. The helmet she wore during that game was sent to the Baseball Hall of Fame in Cooperstown, N.Y., to be displayed permanently.
Reflecting on the moment, Nakken said, “Obviously there’s a historical nature to it. But again, this is my job.”
Kapler’s tenure as the Giants’ manager came to an end on September 29, after two years since being named National League manager of the year. The team failed to reach the playoffs for the second consecutive season. Nakken is now one of the potential candidates, both internal and external, being considered for the managerial position.
Former San Francisco player Aubrey Huff has expressed his objection to Nakken’s interview for the role, using social media to voice his opinion. Huff, who was part of the Giants’ 2010 and 2012 World Series champion teams, posted on X, formerly known as Twitter, “I criticize the @SFGiants interviewing Alyssa Nakken for manager when there are thousands of qualified men that have decades of experience in @MLB. The amount of low-T…feminized beta cucks calling me sexist is exactly why America is no longer a respected global superpower.” Huff had previously expressed similar sentiments when Nakken was initially hired as an assistant coach in 2020.
