Lord Hague expressed his disapproval of the public feud between Rishi Sunak and Boris Johnson regarding the former prime minister’s resignation honors list. The former leader of the Conservative Party described it as an “unseemly business” and not a pleasant sight to witness two prime ministers engaging in such a public dispute.
Sunak claimed that Johnson had asked him to defy the House of Lords Appointments Commission (HOLAC) after some of his proposed peerages were rejected. In response, Johnson dismissed Sunak’s claims as baseless.
When asked about the appropriateness of the row, Lord Hague commented on Times Radio, stating that it is not a pleasant spectacle. He noted that these disagreements between prime ministers and their successors are not uncommon and usually happen over time.
However, he believes that the majority of Conservative MPs, who have not resigned, understand the importance of supporting Rishi Sunak and recognize that the government is making progress under his leadership. Lord Hague believes that the current government is functioning more effectively compared to when Boris Johnson was in power. Therefore, he advises Conservatives not to be disheartened by the situation, acknowledging that it is indeed an unbecoming affair.
