The city leaders of Los Angeles are currently in Washington D.C. to hold meetings with White House officials and advocate for additional resources to address the city’s most urgent needs.
In attendance are Mayor Karen Bass, City Council President Paul Krekorian, and council members Bob Blumenfield, Eunisses Hernandez, Heather Hutt, Traci Park, and Hugo Soto-Martinez. They have embarked on a five-day trip focusing on key areas such as housing the unhoused population, enhancing public safety, supporting veterans, improving transportation, and increasing access to federal funds.
“By working together, we have already seen significant progress in just a few months,” stated Mayor Bass. “Our partnership with the federal government has brought positive change to our city, from providing shelter to the unhoused to improving our transportation system.”
Bass continued, “This delegation will build on that momentum. I am grateful to my colleagues on the City Council for joining me on this trip and amplifying the voice of Angelenos on a national scale. Together, we will continue to lead change in Los Angeles.”
Due to the trip, the City Council has canceled its meetings for Tuesday and Wednesday, but will resume as scheduled on Friday, according to Krekorian’s office.
The city leaders are expected to meet with Secretary of Housing and Urban Development Marcia Fudge to discuss rental assistance requirements, including expanding eligibility for housing vouchers for veterans and increasing funding for affordable housing units.
They will also meet with Secretary of Homeland Security Alejandro Mayorkas to request expedited reimbursements for COVID-related expenses through Federal Emergency Management Assistance, as well as assistance with migrant buses coming from Texas.
Meetings with other White House officials will include Secretary of Veterans Affairs Denis McDonough, Acting Secretary of Labor Julie Su, Neera Tanden (Director of Intergovernmental Affairs), Tom Perez (Director of Domestic Policy Council), Shalanda Young (Director of the Office of Management and Budget), Gregory Jackson and Robert Wilcox (Special Assistants to the President and Deputy Directors for the Office of Gun Violence Prevention), Homeland Security Advisor Elizabeth Sherwood-Randall, and Assistant Secretary of Transportation Christopher Coes.
Earlier this year, Bass and the council successfully secured over $35 million in proposed appropriation bills for Los Angeles in the fiscal year 2024.
The delegation also plans to meet with members of the U.S. House of Representatives and U.S. Senate to explore further opportunities for progress.
