Bono’s Daughter, Eve Hewson, Cast in John Carney’s Flora and Son Film for Apple TV+: A Story of Escaping Dublin’s Traps

Dubliner John Carney, renowned for his musical films such as 2007’s Once and 2016’s Sing Street, is making a comeback with a new production titled Flora and Son. In this feature-length film on Apple TV+, Carney introduces Eve Hewson as Flora, a single mother encouraged by the police to help her rebellious teenage son Max (Oren Kinlan) find a hobby to channel his energy. Hewson’s character is aided by Los Angeles musician Jeff (Joseph Gordon-Levitt), who guides Max in learning the guitar. Together, they embark on a journey that explores the unbreakable bond between a mother and a son.

According to Carney, he first encountered Hewson when she was 15 and accompanied her parents, renowned U2 singer Bono and Ali Hewson. Intrigued by her refined appearance and Victorian dress profile, Carney felt compelled to connect with her via Zoom. Hewson, alongside Gordon-Levitt, convinced Carney that they were the perfect fit for his film. He noted that no one in Dublin, where the movie is set, could embody the character’s saltiness the way Hewson could. Carney emphasized the importance of finding someone who understood the feeling of being trapped in Dublin, a city that elicits both love and hate, leading to a desire to escape and a potential longing to return.

Carney praised Hewson’s talent, describing her as a rockstar, despite her reluctance to label herself as a singer or guitar player. He admired her approach to acting, comparing it to that of a pop singer, as she relied on her instincts and brought a vibrant energy to the set. In collaboration with Carney, Hewson even contributed to co-writing the lyrics for the film. Carney expressed his surprise at her comedic abilities and her overall versatility as an actress.

The choice of Oren Kinlan as Hewson’s on-screen son was a natural one. Carney highlighted Kinlan’s talent and the influence of his father, acclaimed Irish actor Laurence Kinlan, who provided guidance and direction during the audition process. Carney observed a stillness in Kinlan’s performance, a subtlety that made him stand out.

With all the elements in place, Carney reached out to one of the producers, Rob Walpole, affirming his belief that they were ready to bring Flora and Son to life. The film premiered in select cinemas on September 22 and will soon be available for a global audience on Apple TV+.
