Bonny Fire Near Full Containment; Expectation for Full Containment on Monday at 98%

The Riverside County Fire Department announced that the Bonny Fire near Aguanga is now 98% contained. Full containment is expected by Monday. This update comes after a slight increase in containment reported on Friday morning, following the previous update on Thursday evening when containment went from 90% to 95%.

All mandatory evacuation orders for the 2,322-acre fire were lifted on Wednesday. Firefighters have been working overnight to reinforce containment lines and extinguish hot spots.

Evacuation orders have been lifted for properties north of the San Diego County line and south of Ramsey Road since Wednesday afternoon. However, evacuation warnings are still in effect for the area south of Bowers Road, north of Rim Rock Road, east of Bonny Lane, and west of Chapman Road.

Crews that were previously working on the Bonny Fire have now been released to assist with brush fires in Sage and Cabazon.

The Bonny Fire started on the afternoon of July 27 near Bonny and Barber lanes, close to the Cahuilla Indian Reservation. It quickly approached Chapman and Johnston roads but was stopped by the efforts of Cal Fire air tankers and water-dropping helicopters, which protected nearby homes from harm. Unfortunately, one outbuilding and a vehicle were destroyed. One firefighter sustained minor injuries during the first weekend of the fire.

At its peak, around 2,000 personnel, including county engine and hand crews, as well as firefighters from various agencies and hot shot crews from Kern County, were working to contain the fire. The cause of the fire is currently under investigation.
