Boat followed to port by orcas in groundbreaking event

A group of orcas has been attacking sailboats by striking their rudders off the coast of the Iberian Peninsula. While their motivation for these attacks remains unclear, they seem to be growing more aggressive, as they continue to pursue boats even after disabling their rudders. In May alone, there were 20 incidents in the Strait of Gibraltar, with one boat being stalked by the orcas until it reached shore after its rudder was completely destroyed. Despite attempts by sailors to deter the orcas using a range of strategies, including disrupting their sonar with sand in the water, the attacks persisted. Experts from CIRCE have tagged one orca, with plans to track five more in order to better understand the animals’ movements and behavior. However, some worry that such interventions could further aggravate the situation. It remains unclear what is causing these attacks, but sailors are calling for extensive research into the issue rather than demonizing the animals.
