Blue Jays’ Merrifield Flourishes as Leadoff Hitter

Toronto Blue Jays defeat Los Angeles Angels 4-1 with Whit Merrifield as the new leadoff man in a crucial American League wild card race. Merrifield went 3 for 4, including a home run, and was penciled in at the top of the batting order by manager John Schneider. Matt Chapman and Danny Jansen also hit solo home runs for Toronto. Pitcher Kevin Gausman had an outstanding performance with nine strikeouts over six-plus innings, earning his eighth win of the season. Despite Shohei Ohtani’s home run, it wasn’t enough for the Angels to maintain their four-game win streak. Lucas Giolito made his Angels debut, but allowed three runs in 5 1/3 innings. Merrifield extended Toronto’s lead with his eighth home run of the season in the seventh inning. Reliever Chad Green will make his return from Tommy John surgery in a single-A game. Alek Manoah will start for the Blue Jays in the next game.
