Blocking News Content on Instagram and Facebook: Certain Canadians Affected by Meta’s Tests

Social media giant, Meta, is temporarily blocking some Canadian users from accessing news content on Facebook and Instagram as part of a trial that will run until the end of June. The decision follows a similar move by Google earlier this year, in anticipation of proposed legislation that, if enacted into law, would require tech giants to pay publishers for sharing their content online. Canadian Heritage Minister Pablo Rodriguez criticized the move, describing it as “disappointing.” Meta has also warned that should the bill be passed, it is prepared to permanently block news content for Canadian users. The temporary block will affect one to 5% of Meta’s 24 million Canadian users, with users randomly selected for the test, that could include news links to articles, reels, and stories. International news companies including the New York Times or BBC may also have their content blocked in Canada during the trial if they are selected. Meta has assured users that they would still be able to access their accounts and advertising.
