Blissfield and Manitou Beach Communities Benefit from Consumers Energy Grant Program for Tree Planting

The Lenawee County communities have recently secured grant funds from Consumers Energy for tree planting initiatives throughout their cities.

Notably, both the Manitou Beach Historic Renovation Society and the village of Blissfield have shared details with The Daily Telegram about the grants they have received from Consumers Energy through the Community Street and Boulevard Tree Planting grant program.

Blissfield confirmed that it received a $2,600 grant, while the Manitou Beach Historic Renovation Society obtained a $1,500 grant to enhance its resort with newly planted trees.

Backed by the Michigan Forestry and Park Association, the grant program aims to aid local municipalities in their tree planting endeavors, emphasizing on the careful selection of tree species and planting sites on public streets or boulevards.

In a recent news release, Blissfield reported using the funds in conjunction with Village Urban Forestry funds to segment 13 new trees across Blissfield neighborhoods. Various tree species, including oak and red bud, were planted on certain village streets under the oversight of Natural Lawn Care

Speaking on the Manitou Beach side, Historic Renovation Society spokesperson Mike Clark detailed the placement of 15 trees along Main Street and Yacht Club Drive.

“This is the 11th year we have been fortunate to receive this grant, planting over 250 trees in Addison and Manitou Beach,” stated Clark. Sarah Clark and Fred Redman aided in securing the grant and tree planting. The Manitou Beach Historic Renovation Society operates as a 501(c)3 society.

Since 2013, new trees have been integrated at Tibbs Memorial Park, Addison Community Schools, Green’s Lakeside Cemetery, Main Street between Manitou Road and Elm Street, and at North Lakeview Boulevard in the Manitou Beach village district.
