Blaze near MoVal’s North Canyon Grows to Nearly 400 Acres; 5% Under Control

A brush fire ignited on Friday in a canyon north of Moreno Valley, scorching 385 acres and necessitating precautionary evacuations before firefighting crews were able to contain it.

The non-injury fire was reported around 1 p.m. in the vicinity of Reche Canyon Road and High Country Drive, according to the Riverside County Fire Department.

The agency dispatched multiple engine and hand crews from different departments, including the county, Idyllwild Fire Protection District, and Cal Fire-San Bernardino County, who confronted swiftly spreading flames in medium brush.

Buildings in the path of the fire reportedly sustained damage as the flames moved eastward.

The ignition point is located in a sparsely populated area, consisting of single-family homes and mobile homes, but the fire was heading towards a larger community adjacent to the Badlands.

An evacuation order was issued for residences south of Reche Canyon, north of Alta Vista Drive, west of Locust Avenue, and east of Reche Vista Drive. A nearby community received an evacuation warning.

During the peak of the fire, six Cal Fire air tankers and six water-dropping helicopters were deployed, effectively halting its progress and allowing crews to reinforce containment lines.

By 5:30 p.m. on Friday, all air tankers had been released to assist with other wildfires, while only a few helicopters remained on the firelines.

The fire was reported to be 5% contained, with evacuation orders still in effect but potentially scheduled for lift-off overnight.

California Highway Patrol officers were managing traffic in the area due to the presence of significant public safety equipment, although Reche Canyon Road was not threatened by the fire.

The cause of the fire remains unknown.
