Black Experience Survey Launched by LA City Reparations Advisory Commission

The Reparations Advisory Commission of Los Angeles has launched a groundbreaking survey, inviting Black current and former residents to share their unique experiences and perspectives on addressing issues that have significantly impacted their lives. Led by renowned researchers from Cal State Northridge, this survey serves as a critical step in mapping the Black experience within the city and will lay the foundation for a future reparations program.

In a statement, Commission Chair Michael Lawson, who also serves as the president and CEO of the Los Angeles Urban League, emphasized the importance of African Americans participating in the survey: “I urge all African Americans, both current and former residents of Los Angeles, to take part in this survey and help shape the scope of reparations in our city.”

Lawson added, “By combining the results of this survey with comprehensive academic and historical research, we will obtain valuable insights that will inform the nature and extent of reparations in Los Angeles. It is crucial that all affected individuals, including those who have passed away, have their voices heard during this important process.”

In June 2021, the city established the Reparations Advisory Commission, consisting of influential figures in activism, academia, law, and racial justice. This blue ribbon task force’s objective is to advise the city on implementing a future pilot reparations program specifically for Black residents.

To ensure the success of this initiative, researchers aim to gather thousands of responses before the survey concludes in the fall. The survey also includes an interactive online history map, illustrating the evolution of Black communities in Los Angeles from 1930 to 2022. The commission expects to finalize the study next year and present recommendations for reparations to city leaders by early 2025.

Capri Maddox, Executive Director of LA Civil Rights, emphasized the importance of reparations: “The Reparations Advisory Commission is on the forefront of developing Los Angeles’ inaugural reparations program, which seeks to rectify generations of systemic discrimination that have deprived Black Angelenos of their health, wealth, and liberty. By shedding light on untold stories and the impact of racial covenants and redlining, this survey empowers current and former residents to share their narratives and shape our collective story.”

If you are a current or former resident of Los Angeles, we invite you to participate in the survey and make your voice heard. Click here to access the survey, which takes approximately 25-30 minutes to complete.
