Twin girls, Rose and Sophia, have received heartfelt birthday messages from their late father, Nick Keenan, who left behind 30 years’ worth of cards for his beloved daughters. Nick, from Lindfield, began writing future birthday cards for his twin girls when they were just 17 months old, as he tragically battled a brain tumor. Inspired by the plot of the popular novel and film, “P.S. I Love You!”, Nick wanted to ensure that his daughters would have birthday messages from him every year. The girls recently opened their fourth birthday cards from their late father, where he shared advice for their upcoming start at school and encouraged them to look after each other. Nick passed away at the age of 34 in November 2020, nine months after being diagnosed with a glioblastoma, an aggressive form of cancer. This touching gesture of writing birthday cards for his daughters for the next 30 years showcases Nick’s love and dedication towards his children.
Nick’s wife, Victoria Keenan, revealed that her husband was always a pillar of strength and support for everyone, including herself. Despite his own battles with cancer, he still managed to accompany Victoria through IVF treatment to conceive their twin girls. Victoria expressed her admiration for Nick’s selflessness and stated that he wrote birthday cards for Rose and Sophia to be with them in spirit as they celebrated their birthdays without him. She hopes that these cards will provide her daughters with a deeper understanding of their father’s life during that time. Nick’s incredible resilience and determination, even while facing his own mortality, inspire and touch the hearts of everyone who knew him.
Nick’s journey with brain cancer began in 2015 when he was diagnosed with an astrocytoma, a common brain tumor, after experiencing symptoms such as shooting pins and needles down his right arm. He underwent multiple surgeries, radiotherapy, chemotherapy, and various other treatments in his fight against the disease. Even in the midst of his own battle, Nick remained a source of strength for those around him. In March 2020, doctors informed Nick that he likely had less than a year to live. Despite this devastating news, he continued to face each day with courage and determination.
Victoria recalls the moment she realized something was wrong when Nick returned from a business trip early, visibly upset. It was then that they discovered a lesion the size of a tennis ball on the left side of Nick’s brain. Despite the challenges they faced, Nick’s treatment went well, and he and Victoria decided to proceed with IVF and fulfill their dreams of starting a family. However, in December 2019, just six months after their daughters were born, Nick’s speech became slurred. Medical examinations revealed that his tumor had developed into a glioblastoma, and he was given a prognosis of less than a year to live. Nick continued to undergo treatments and was considered for a clinical trial, but unfortunately, there came a point when no further options were available.
In November 2020, Nick passed away at a hospice after becoming unconscious at home. Victoria’s parents stepped in to care for their sleeping daughters, while Victoria stayed by Nick’s side during his final moments. After his passing, Victoria faced the difficult task of carrying on as a mother to their young daughters, knowing that their loving father was no longer with them. As a testament to the bond they shared, Victoria reveals that she bought Nick a dachshund puppy named Poppy following his diagnosis. Tragically, Poppy also succumbed to a brain tumor, leaving Victoria devastated. To honor Nick’s memory and help others facing similar battles, Victoria is now urging people to support Brain Tumor Research by signing their petition to increase research funding. By reaching 100,000 signatures, the charity hopes to spark a parliamentary debate and bring more attention to the importance of brain tumor research.
To sign and share Brain Tumor Research’s petition before it concludes in October 2023, visit their website at www.braintumourresearch.org/petition. Together, we can make a difference in the fight against brain cancer and honor the memory of Nick Keenan, a brave and loving father who left a lasting impact on his twin daughters and all who knew him.
