The Birmingham Stallions clinched their second consecutive USFL championship on Saturday night with an impressive victory over the Pittsburgh Maulers. The game took place in Canton, Ohio, where the Stallions dominated their opponents by a score of 28-12. The Stallions’ defense was in top form, limiting the Maulers to only three field goals, while their own offense scored two touchdowns, giving them a 14-9 halftime lead.
The second half started with Birmingham receiving the ball and their quarterback, Alex McGough, continued his outstanding performance from the first half. After Ricky Person’s impressive 41-yard run, McGough found Deon Cain in the end zone for a touchdown, extending the Stallions’ lead to 21-9. The Maulers managed to narrow the gap with a field goal from Chris Blewitt, but the Stallions quickly responded with another scoring drive. However, a fumble by McGough on 3rd and goal gave Pittsburgh an opportunity. Olive Sagapolu recovered the ball but handed it off to Kyahva Tezino, resulting in an illegal handoff and the Maulers getting possession at the Birmingham 33-yard line. Despite the turnover, the Maulers could only settle for another missed field goal, allowing the Stallions to maintain their nine-point lead going into the fourth quarter.
In the final quarter, the Maulers attempted to mount a comeback but failed to convert on a crucial 4th and 8 play. This gave Birmingham the ball back with just over seven minutes remaining, and they capitalized on the opportunity. McGough connected with Cain for a deep pass, resulting in a touchdown and giving the Stallions a commanding 28-12 lead.
McGough, who was named the league’s MVP after throwing 20 touchdowns during the regular season, continued his exceptional performance in the championship game. He completed 18 of his 25 passes for 243 yards and also contributed 64 rushing yards. Person and C.J. Marable added another 86 rushing yards on their 14 carries. McGough’s favorite target, Cain, caught three of his four touchdown passes, finishing the game with four receptions for 70 yards. Jace Sternberger and Davion Davis also made significant contributions to the Stallions’ offense.
As the celebration for the Stallions’ victory ensues, football fans won’t have to wait long for more action, as NFL teams are set to kick off their training camps later this month. Stay tuned for more thrilling football moments.
