Bill Concerning Transgender College Athletes Signed by Texas Governor

Texas Governor Greg Abbott has recently signed into law SB 15, a bill that has been criticized by the ACLU of Texas for being unfair, unconstitutional, and cruel. This law requires college athletes to compete on teams that align with the sex they were assigned at birth. As a result, transgender men will be required to play on women’s teams, while transgender women will be forced to play on men’s teams, as reported by the Austin American-Statesman. Commonly referred to as the “Save Women’s Sports Act,” SB 15 is an extension of a previous law implemented in 2021, which prohibited transgender girls from participating in girls’ teams in K-12 schools, according to CBS News.

In a press release, Governor Abbott referred to transgender women as “men.” In his statement, he emphasized the importance of protecting female athletes, including young girls aspiring to compete in college sports. Surrounded by fellow Republican lawmakers and collegiate athletes, he signed the bill, as stated in the CBS report.

Critics, including LGBTQ+ rights groups and Democratic lawmakers, accused the governor of targeting a vulnerable minority and wasting time on a non-existent issue. According to KXAN, there have been no reports of transgender athletes competing in any sport at Texas NCAA universities, let alone causing harm to female athletes. Outsports reported that only 36 openly transgender athletes have participated in college sports across the country in the last decade, none of whom were in Texas. (Read more transgender stories.)
