LOS ANGELES — In a shocking turn of events, popular actor Danny Masterson, known for his role in “That ’70s Show,” has recently been sentenced to 30 years to life in prison for raping two women. And now, just two weeks after the sentencing, his wife, actress Bijou Phillips, has made the difficult decision to file for divorce.
Phillips’ attorney, Peter Lauzon, confirmed the news to TMZ, stating, “Ms. Phillips has found it necessary to seek a divorce at this unfortunate time. Her main focus remains on her daughter. The past few weeks have been incredibly challenging for their marriage and family. Throughout the hardships, Mr. Masterson has continuously supported Ms. Phillips. He has proven himself to be an exceptional father.”
The divorce papers were officially filed on Monday in Santa Barbara, according to “Entertainment Tonight.”
The couple tied the knot in 2011 and welcomed their daughter in 2014.
Throughout the lengthy rape case, Phillips, 43, stood by her husband’s side. When Masterson, 47, was found guilty in May, Phillips couldn’t contain her emotions in the courtroom, resulting in a warning from the judge to maintain decorum.
Phillips even wrote a heartfelt letter to the judge, vouching for Masterson’s character ahead of his sentencing. She expressed how he had dedicated himself to finding alternate ways to support their family after losing his acting career due to the lingering rape case. Phillips explained that they had moved to a farm in Santa Ynez, where Masterson had personally cultivated a beautiful vineyard with 6,000 vines over six years.
While Phillips acknowledged her husband’s conviction for these serious crimes, she, along with their daughter, remains devastated that he is unable to be there with them. Masterson would call their daughter daily from jail, further compounding the heartbreak they experienced.
