Biden’s Trip to Lithuania Marred by Gaffes: Confusion Between Ukraine and Russia, Zelenskyy and Putin

During his visit to Lithuania this week to show support for Ukraine in its conflict with Russia, President Biden made several speaking errors, including confusing the two nations and their leaders. While addressing the NATO summit in Vilnius, Lithuania, Biden mistakenly referred to Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy as “Vladmir,” seemingly mixing him up with Russian President Vladmir Putin. Despite realizing his mistake, Biden acknowledged his unfamiliarity and referred to Zelenskyy as “Mr. Zelenskyy.”

It’s worth noting that Putin and Zelenskyy have slightly different versions of the same name, with “Volodymyr” being the more commonly used version in Ukraine. However, at a later speaking event after the summit, Biden again confused the two nations, mistakenly referring to Ukraine as Russia. He quickly corrected himself, stating that Russia could end the war by withdrawing its forces from Ukraine, recognizing international borders, and ceasing its attacks on Ukraine.

These speaking gaffes add to a series of frequent missteps by Biden, including last month’s comment where he mistakenly claimed that Putin was “clearly losing the war in Iraq.” These errors raise concerns about Biden’s cognitive abilities as president, especially considering that if he were to win a second term, he would be 86 years old when leaving the White House.
