Washington — President Biden will not be attending the United Nations climate change conference, COP28, in Dubai, opting to remain focused on domestic affairs and the ongoing crisis in Israel and Gaza.
The two-week summit, which will host world leaders and diplomats, will be represented by a team from the White House, including John Kerry, U.S. special presidential envoy for climate. Secretary of State Antony Blinken also plans to attend COP28 events.
Although the conference is not listed on President Biden’s weekly schedule, a White House spokesman stated that there are no travel updates to share at this time and affirmed the Administration’s commitment to the event.
President Biden has participated in the conference twice before, making ambitious pledges to tackle climate change. The recent release of the Fifth National Climate Assessment underscores the urgent need for action, with the report highlighting the grim outlook of climate change on the U.S.
Addressing the impact of climate change, President Biden emphasized the dangers of denial, warning of increasingly severe and costly consequences if action is not taken.
