Biden stands firm: Reiterates dedication to NATO and Ukraine

U.S. President Joe Biden delivered a powerful speech on NATO at Vilnius University in Lithuania after the conclusion of the NATO Summit, which marked Russia’s ongoing aggression against Ukraine for over 500 days.

Addressing the looming threat, Biden, who is currently preparing for reelection, reaffirmed the United States’ unwavering commitment to Ukraine. He described supporting Kyiv’s fight for democracy as the ultimate responsibility of our era.

Over the past 18 months, Russia’s invasion of Ukraine, the largest military conflict since World War II, has prompted the U.S. to allocate more than $41 billion to assist Kyiv.

In his address from Vilnius, Lithuania, Biden praised the collective response from the U.S., NATO, and Indo-Pacific partners, stating, “We did what we always do. The U.S. stepped up, NATO stepped up, and our Indo-Pacific partners stepped up.”

With determination, he declared, “We will stand firm in our support for Ukraine for as long as necessary.”

Biden’s speech followed a two-day NATO summit, where member nations provided security assurances to Ukraine. The arrival of Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy added momentum to the discussions, as he reiterated his calls for NATO membership and emphasized that Ukraine’s inclusion would strengthen the world’s most formidable military alliance.

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy passionately addressed a crowd at Lukiskiu Square in Vilnius, Lithuania, during the NATO Summit on July 11, 2023.

Zelenskyy’s appeals for NATO membership have been ongoing since 2002. With four NATO allies – Poland, Slovakia, Hungary, and Romania – sharing borders with Ukraine, the country has a strong case for inclusion.

In September, Zelenskyy applied for a fast-track membership to NATO and has since sought support from various European capitals to bolster Kyiv’s candidacy.

However, Sweden’s bid to join NATO took center stage during the summit, overshadowing Ukraine’s efforts. Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan announced his country’s support for Sweden’s inclusion.

Last year, Sweden and Finland initiated the formal application process for NATO membership, with Finland successfully joining the alliance in April. Following this summit, Sweden is expected to become the 32nd member of NATO.
