President Joe Biden is set to have a meeting with experts in artificial intelligence (AI) in San Francisco on Tuesday. This meeting is part of the government’s ongoing efforts to effectively regulate AI technology. The White House has confirmed this news.
The purpose of this meeting is to gain a deeper understanding of the risks and benefits associated with AI, preventing the repetition of past mistakes made with the lack of early regulation on social media and other internet technologies.
The eight experts President Biden will meet are heavily involved in AI research and advocacy. They include:
- Tristan Harris, Co-founder and Executive Director of the Center for Humane Technology. Harris is a former design ethicist at Google and is known for critically examining tech platforms in the documentary “The Social Dilemma.”
- Jim Steyer, Founder and CEO of Common Sense Media. Steyer advocates for policies that ensure a safer internet experience for families.
- Joy Buolamwin, Founder of the Algorithmic Justice League. Buolamwin’s organization raises awareness about the potential impact and biases of AI in society.
- Sal Khan, Founder and CEO of Khan Academy. Khan runs an online education nonprofit.
The Biden administration has been actively engaging with the AI issue. White House principals hold meetings on AI two to three times a week to address its various aspects.
Earlier in May, Vice President Kamala Harris hosted executives from the AI industry, including Sam Altman (CEO of OpenAI) and Sundar Pichai (CEO of Google). Altman later testified before Congress, where legislators are currently considering the establishment of regulations to mitigate bias and manage the impact of AI on the workforce, among other things.
During his visit to San Francisco, President Biden is also expected to raise funds for his 2024 reelection campaign, according to The Associated Press.
