Aug. 16 (UPI) — An esteemed restaurant chain from Alberta emerged victorious in a heated bidding war for a unique item put up for sale by the provincial government: a sandwich costume.

The extraordinary costume, made of latex, vulcanized rubber, and synthetic materials, represents a donair—a Canadian flatbread wrap inspired by the gyro and filled with shaved beef, sauce, tomatoes, onions, and lettuce. The costume was created by Alterian Inc., a special effects studio based in Los Angeles back in 2015. It was originally meant for a video public service announcement (PSA) in Alberta on the hazards of driving under the influence of marijuana. However, the project was canceled, and the costume never made its television debut.

The province listed the sandwich suit on an online surplus auction, which sparked fierce competition among various organizations and restaurants. The bidding war also fueled an online debate about whether lettuce is a suitable ingredient for a donair.

Nicholas Nahas, co-owner of King of Donair based in Nova Scotia, placed a bid to bring the costume to the eastern coast of Canada. He intended to remove the lettuce, aligning with the donair style popular in that region. However, the winning bid of $16,025 in Canadian currency ($11,854.65 U.S.) came from PrimeTime Donair & Poutine, an Edmonton-based eatery. They declared that the costume would stay in Alberta, and the lettuce would remain on the donair.

“During the bidding process, some individuals from other shops, who are from the Maritimes, expressed their opinion that lettuce should not be part of a donair,” said Adil Asim, the owner of PrimeTime Donair & Poutine, in an interview with CBC News. “However, the majority of people here enjoy lettuce.”

Asim and his team are now strategizing how to utilize the costume to promote their restaurant chain. “I might even squeeze my 16-year-old son into it to create some buzz, but we are also considering collaborating with comedians and producing TikTok content,” he revealed to CTV News.
