“Renaissance: A Film by Beyoncé” is more than just a concert, according to Beyoncé herself. She describes it as a cultural experience, a state of mind, a release, and a fantasy come true.
Fans who were lucky enough to experience Beyoncé’s record-breaking Renaissance World Tour before its conclusion in early October understand this sentiment. Throughout the tour, Beyoncé fostered a sense of community among her admirers, who are affectionately known as the Beyhive. The tour ended up being a massive success for the superstar, as it became the highest-grossing tour by a Black artist and the eighth-highest-grossing tour of all time, raking in a total of $579 million worldwide.
It’s clear that Beyoncé poured precision and care into the tour’s production, dedicating a painstaking four years to perfecting the aural spectacular. Despite battling a knee injury that required surgery in the lead-up to the tour’s start, she made it a reality. In her own words, she described the tour as a “machine” that came to life with the help of a team that included women building screens panel by panel, nurses, editors, tailors, choreographers, and catering staff who all contributed to its success.
To illustrate the enormity of the endeavor, Beyoncé explains the intricacies of creating the stages: “In order to perform as many times as we perform, we have three stages. As one is getting set up, the other two stages are traveling to the next city and getting built.”
The multi-hour show’s runtime meant that not every song performed during the tour made it into “Renaissance: A Film by Beyoncé.” However, it does include the majority of the setlist, offering audiences a glimpse into what it takes to pull off such a large-scale production.
