Bernie Sanders Casts Doubts on Achieving Ceasefire With Hamas: A Challenging Prospect?

CNN

Independent Senator Bernie Sanders expressed doubts about the possibility of a ceasefire in the ongoing Israel-Hamas conflict, citing the involvement of “an organization like Hamas.”

Sanders made the statement during an interview with CNN’s Dana Bash on “State of the Union” Sunday, emphasizing his belief that a permanent ceasefire with a group like Hamas, known for its dedication to turmoil and the destruction of Israel, would be challenging to achieve.

Amidst the sustained bombardment of Gaza by Israel, massive protests have taken place in Washington, D.C. and other capital cities worldwide, urging for an end to the conflict.

The devastating attacks on Gaza have resulted in nearly 10,000 casualties, predominantly civilians and children. Israel’s airstrikes have targeted hospitals, schools, refugee camps, and ambulances, leading to international outrage and allegations of war crimes.

Despite calls for a ceasefire, Israeli authorities have rejected the notion until the release of all hostages. Israel maintains that it does not deliberately target civilians, but aims to eliminate Hamas, a designated terrorist group by the United States and European Union.

While the Biden administration has supported temporary pauses in the conflict for humanitarian reasons, Secretary of State Antony Blinken opposes a ceasefire, fearing that it would allow Hamas to regroup and launch further attacks.

Sanders stressed the need to end the bombing and the humanitarian crisis, advocating for a two-state solution to provide hope for the Palestinian people.

When asked about Representative Rashida Tlaib’s accusation that President Joe Biden supports a “genocide” against Palestinians, Sanders defended Tlaib, calling her a friend with a personal connection to Palestine. He also dismissed the notion that former President Trump would have been better on this or any other issue.

Tlaib, a vocal advocate for Palestinian rights, has been openly critical of Israel since her tenure in Congress began. Her recent remarks have caused divisions within her party as they strive for unity during the Israel-Hamas conflict.

Tlaib released a video urging President Biden to call for a ceasefire, highlighting widespread protests across several states and accusing him of supporting the “genocide” of Palestinians. The video concludes with messages urging Biden to support the ceasefire or face consequences in the upcoming 2024 elections.
