The “listening sessions,” which are a part of the Belfast TradFest, draw inspiration from the Ceili house tradition. This tradition involves gathering at the home of a master musician to witness their practice. Similar to this practice, attendees of the “listening sessions” have the opportunity to watch their favorite performers during the first hour, and then join in the musical experience.
The fifth Belfast TradFest, scheduled from July 23-30, offers a range of music events in some of Belfast’s famous traditional pubs. These events showcase traditional musicians like Joanie Madden, Neil Martin, Mary Bergin, Brid Harper, Gerry ‘Banjo’ O’Connor, Siobhan Peoples, John Doyle, Paul ‘The Brother’ Maguire, Francis McIlduff, Maeve O’Donnell, and Joshua Burnside.
Admission to all sessions is free, and each session lasts for two hours. The Session Trail, sponsored by McConnell’s Irish Whisky this year, will take place in 15 Belfast pubs. These bars, such as Madden’s Bar, The Garrick, Kelly’s Cellars, and The Sunflower, consistently support traditional music. The Belfast TradFest aims to promote these bars and other venues on the session trail by featuring talented traditional musicians in over sixty free sessions.
Belfast Lord Mayor Ryan Murphy expresses excitement about the vibrant traditional music and dance that will fill the streets of Belfast during the last week of July. He also looks forward to this event making traditional artforms more accessible to both residents and summer visitors.
