In a thrilling finale to the historic Bedlam rivalry, No. 22 Oklahoma State dashed Oklahoma’s dreams of a national championship.
The Sooners, ranked No. 9 with a 7-1 record, entered the game in Stillwater looking to solidify their College Football Playoff hopes. However, Oklahoma State’s commanding 27-24 victory not only ended their title aspirations but also positioned the Cowboys favorably for the upcoming Big 12 championship game.
Oklahoma State staged a remarkable comeback after surrendering an early 17-7 lead, trailing 21-17 going into the fourth quarter.
To regain the advantage, the Cowboys embarked on a stunning 97-yard scoring drive, capped off by a two-yard touchdown run from Ollie Gordon. Despite facing earlier challenges on fourth-and-1 in Oklahoma territory, Gordon’s determination prevailed, giving Oklahoma State a 24-21 lead with 7:59 remaining in the game.
The momentum continued to swing in favor of the Cowboys as the Sooners handed them a turnover when quarterback Dillon Gabriel failed to handle the snap. Oklahoma State recovered the fumble, further bolstering their position.
Following the turnover, Oklahoma State added a field goal, extending their lead to 27-21 and then valiantly held on until the end.
The Cowboys’ resolute defense limited Oklahoma to a field goal on their subsequent drive, despite controversy surrounding a potential pass interference call in the end zone.
In the final minutes, Oklahoma had one last opportunity. Trailing 27-24, the Sooners advanced to midfield, but their hopes were dashed when a fourth-and-5 pass from Gabriel to Drake Stoops fell just short of the line to gain, resulting in a turnover on downs.
