“I believe it could be related to coaching,” Fields suggested. “However, when it comes down to it… They are doing their job by providing me with what to focus on and other information. But when it’s game time, I can’t let that occupy my mind. I prepare myself throughout the week, and when the game begins, it’s about playing freely. So, less thinking and more playing.”
Fields clarified that he doesn’t feel overwhelmed by multiple coaches in Chicago, but he does think that simplification could benefit him. Instead of relying solely on instinct, the overload of information is causing him to process too much, which slows him down.
To be clear, this doesn’t indicate a conflict between a player and coach, at least not yet. Eberflus did not react negatively to Fields’ comments on Wednesday, acknowledging that they both have the same goal in mind.
“I think he wants to let it flow, let it go, and be himself, allowing him to play freely. That’s where he’s at right now. And that’s what we want,” Eberflus said about Fields. “We want him to be able to do that. He feels the pressure in the pocket and sees opportunities to either scramble, make a downfield throw, or take off and run.”
Fields has been forced to rely on his mobility too often in the first two weeks due to a porous offensive line. The lack of protection has limited his time to work through his progressions, resulting in a stagnant and seemingly hopeless offense.
Fields shouldn’t be expected to be a hero or Superman. However, there is no simple solution to Chicago’s protection issues, which means he and Eberflus will need to collaborate to find a solution.

“There have been moments when I’ve tried to be a perfectionist,” Fields admitted on Wednesday. “But nothing in this world is perfect, so as I said, I just need to think less and go out there and play.”
Sunday won’t be any easier as Kansas City’s defense has only allowed a total of 30 points in two games against superior offenses compared to Chicago’s. However, it is the next game on the schedule, providing the next opportunity for Fields, Eberflus, and the Bears to take a positive step forward.
