Bears’ Jaylon Johnson Reportedly Pursuing Trade Prior to Deadline

According to a source briefed by ESPN’s Jeremy Fowler, the Chicago Bears have authorized cornerback Jaylon Johnson to actively seek a trade before the approaching deadline on Tuesday.

The source informed Fowler that Johnson expressed his desire to be traded after failing to reach an agreement with the Bears last week.

Johnson, a highly talented player, is set to become a free agent following this season, making him one of the most sought-after assets in the market. Notably, veteran defensive backs Kevin Byard and J.C. Jackson have already been traded ahead of the 4 p.m. ET deadline on Tuesday.

According to ESPN’s Ed Werder, sources indicate that the San Francisco 49ers and Buffalo Bills are actively engaged in discussions about potential trades for Johnson.

If the Bears, currently in last place with a 2-6 record, are unable to secure a trade for Johnson, they may consider using their franchise tag on him next year.

During an interview with Chicago radio station 670 The Score, Johnson mentioned that contract negotiations with the Bears were “starting to ramp up,” but he also acknowledged the uncertainty surrounding a possible trade.

In his fourth season with the Bears, the 24-year-old Johnson has showcased his skills with 18 tackles, two interceptions, and a forced fumble in six games this year. Since being drafted as a second-round pick in 2020, Johnson has accumulated 143 tackles and three interceptions in his 45 appearances for Chicago.
