Bear Invades Colorado Home on Tuesday, Returns on Wednesday

On Tuesday night, a clever black bear made its way into a home in Granby through an unlocked door. Surprisingly, the bear returned for another visit just hours later.

According to Rachel Gonzales, the spokesperson for Colorado Parks and Wildlife, the second break-in occurred sometime between 9 p.m. on Tuesday and 9 a.m. on Wednesday when no one was home. Gonzales explained, “Bears usually struggle with knob-style doors, but this bear managed to open them. That’s why it’s crucial for people living in bear country to lock their windows and doors because once a bear figures it out, they will continue to come back.”

Thankfully, no one was harmed during the break-ins, and the damage to the home was relatively minimal, likely caused by the bear’s search for food. Gonzales consulted the district wildlife officer, who rated the damage a three out of five, comparing it to the aftermath of a great party.

To prevent bears from entering your home, Colorado Parks and Wildlife advises keeping your garage doors, car doors, and windows closed and locked at night. It’s also necessary to remove tree limbs that could provide access to upper-level decks and windows. Surprisingly, playing talk radio when leaving your home can startle most bears due to the sound of human voices.

If a bear does manage to enter your home, consult a fact sheet provided by CPW, which recommends opening doors and windows to allow the bear to exit the same way it entered. It’s essential not to approach the bear or block any escape routes.

Remember, under no circumstances should you approach a bear. Instead, contact your local CPW office. If the bear poses an immediate threat to human safety, call 911.
