‘Barbie’ Shatters Box Office Records, Raking in an Impressive $155 Million on Opening Weekend

“Barbie” had a blockbuster debut at the box office, generating a staggering $155 million in its opening weekend. This not only marks the biggest opening of the year but also the largest opening for any film directed by a woman, as estimated and released on Sunday.

Greta Gerwig, the director of the live-action film, has brought to life Mattel’s iconic doll that has evolved since its introduction in 1959. Starring Margot Robbie as Barbie and Ryan Gosling as Ken, Barbie’s male counterpart introduced in 1961, the film is a captivating portrayal of these beloved characters.

Previously, the two highest-grossing female-directed films were “Captain Marvel” co-directed by Anna Boden, which made $153 million in its first weekend in 2019, and “Wonder Woman” directed by Patty Jenkins, which opened to $103 million in North America in 2017.

In addition to the success of “Barbie,” director Christopher Nolan’s biographical drama “Oppenheimer” had an impressive opening weekend, earning $80.5 million. The film tells the story of J. Robert Oppenheimer and his pivotal role in developing the atomic bomb during World War II.

The overwhelming enthusiasm for these two distinct films even led to the highest overall weekend box office gross in North America since the COVID-19 pandemic started, reaching a remarkable $302 million. This stands as the fourth-largest weekend box office gross of all time.

Securing the third spot was the faith-based drama “Sound of Freedom,” which continued to perform exceptionally well, accumulating $20 million in its third week of release and surpassing $120 million in domestic gross.

“Mission: Impossible — Dead Reckoning Part One” claimed the fourth position with $19.5 million, followed closely by “Indiana Jones and the Dial of Destiny” at fifth place, earning $6.7 million in its fourth week.

Rounding out the top 10 domestic releases, according to Comscore’s estimates, were “Insidious: The Red Door” ($6.5 million), “Elemental” ($5.8 million), “Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse” ($2.8 million), “Transformers: Rise of the Beasts” ($1.1 million), and “No Hard Feelings” ($1 million).

As reported by Comscore, the year-to-date domestic total now stands at an impressive $5.392 billion, showing a remarkable 16% increase compared to this time last year.
