“Blue Beetle” has dethroned “Barbie” at the box office, making a strong debut with $25.4 million and claiming the top spot in North America. This superhero film, produced by Warner Brothers and DC Comics and featuring Xolo Maridueña as the titular hero, is the first movie to surpass “Barbie” since its release five weeks ago.
Greta Gerwig’s live-action adaptation of the iconic Mattel toy, “Barbie,” remained in second place, earning $21.5 million over the weekend. The film has now accumulated a domestic total of over $567 million and a global total exceeding $1.279 billion, according to Comscore.
“Oppenheimer” secured third place with a gross of $10.6 million in its fifth week, followed by “Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: Mutant Mayhem” with $8.4 million in its third week. “Strays” opened with $8.3 million, taking the fifth spot on the box office chart.
Comscore’s estimates also include “Meg 2: The Trench” with $6.7 million, “Talk To Me” with $3.1 million, “Haunted Mansion” with $3 million, “Mission: Impossible — Dead Reckoning Part One” with $2.7 million, and “The Last Voyage of the Demeter” with $2.5 million.
The total three-day box office earnings for this weekend were estimated to be $99 million. Year-to-date, the box office has generated $6.484 billion, marking a 24% increase compared to the same period last year, as reported by Comscore.
