Bake Off: The Professionals – Is It Necessary to Tinker with Perfection?

Cooking with spirit levels and power tools may be interesting, but do we really need to “reimagine” the banoffee pie? This is a question that arises while watching Bake Off: The Professionals. The newest co-host, Ellie Taylor, made a questionable fashion choice with a dress that resembled a lemon soufflé, setting a disappointing tone for the show.

The professional cooking teams showcased their talent, but the tasks they were given were overly elaborate. Making 36 opera aux fruits and a chocolate “amenity” seemed unnecessarily complicated. And then, there was the banoffee pie reinvention. It begs the question: why change something that was already a simple genius? This is a common issue in modern cooking, constantly tampering with perfection.

While it was amusing to discover that Nicolette and Georgina practiced mindfulness with puppy yoga, these glimpses into the private lives of the professionals felt forced. Andrew and Ralph skiing or Andrew and Raf hailing from Bolton didn’t add much depth to the show.

Interestingly, the least glamorous team, Martyn and Jenny, turned out to be the most intriguing. Their opera cakes were 36 disasters, and Jenny, affectionately known as the Deaf Chef in the industry, is deaf. Ellie managed to ask a calm and thoughtful question, wondering if Jenny ever felt tempted to remove the batteries from her hearing aids during the judging. Jenny admitted she had considered it, not wanting to hear the critique. Even more fascinating, Jenny couldn’t help but laugh when the judges struggled to cut into their opera cakes. Contestants like Jenny bring a refreshing perspective to the competition.

Cherish, one of the judges, is quite a character. Her use of language is quite astonishing, with statements like “Chef, it all go pear-shaped, isn’t it?” She seems like a clockwork nemesis, while Benoit exudes a serious soldier-like aura.

In the second part of the show, Margo and Aly’s chocolate pirate ship could be heard cracking in its mold. Andrew and Ralph used a spirit level to ensure their reimagined banoffee pie was perfect. Martyn and Jenny, willing to take risks to remain in the competition, even used a power tool to drill a hole in their chocolate banana tree. However, they struggled to make the bananas stick, resulting in a unique display. Martyn claimed it was interactive, and they piled the bananas on top of the tree. Cherish had to cut one off, and she was thrilled. Even Benoit, in his military manner, seemed impressed.
