UW dominated Miami with Anna Smrek’s impressive 15 kills, securing a spot in the NCAA Tournament round of 16.
The Wisconsin Badgers triumphed over the Miami Hurricanes in the NCAA Tournament, securing a 3-0 victory (25-23, 25-15, 25-15).
Junior middle blocker, Anna Smrek, led with 15 kills as UW’s outside hitters, Sarah Franklin and Temi Thomas-Ailara, finished with 13 and 10 kills, respectively.
Although UW’s victory seemed dominant, Miami’s early game prowess posed challenges. Head coach Kelly Sheffield acknowledged Miami’s formidable pressure on teams, especially through their serving, causing an initial struggle for Wisconsin.
While Miami took an early lead in the opening sets, Wisconsin rallied thanks to the crowd’s energy and strategic serving, leading to a thrilling showdown.
Sophomore defensive specialist Gülce Güçtekin delivered a remarkable performance, making 16 digs, displaying exceptional athleticism to secure vital saves.
Wisconsin’s sheer determination shone through, with standout plays by multiple players. Their resilience eventually secured a spot in the round of 16, exuding confidence for their upcoming matches.
As they move forward, the Badgers remain determined to achieve their goals in the tournament by leaving it all on the court.
Following their victory, the Badgers will face the Penn State Nittany Lions in the Round of 16 at the Field House next Thursday.
