Backlash Emerges as Naomi Campbell Collaborates with Pretty Little Thing

The renowned supermodel, Naomi Campbell, known for her work with prestigious fashion brands like Prada, Yves Saint Laurent, and Burberry, is set to launch a clothing line in collaboration with Pretty Little Thing (PLT) in the near future. PLT recently released a promotional video to tease this exciting partnership, featuring an empty director’s chair on a photoshoot set with the words, “Pretty Little Thing designed by Naomi Campbell coming soon.”

While PLT has faced criticism in the past for being part of the fast fashion cycle, which involves the mass production of low-cost, low-quality clothing and accessories, the negative environmental impacts of this industry are well-known. In fact, the UN Environment Programme (UNEP) has labeled the fashion industry the second-largest consumer of water and responsible for 8 to 10% of global carbon emissions, more than all international flights and maritime shipping combined.

Fans have expressed their disappointment and shock at this collaboration due to PLT’s fast fashion business model. One Twitter user stated, “Naomi Campbell x PLT is the most disappointing collab to come out in recent times… I have no words.” Another person questioned whether this collaboration highlights the unattainability of sustainable fashion and people’s indifference to fixing the problem.

As one fan noted, “Never thought I’d see the day where PLT and a whole Naomi Campbell collab”. Another added, “A high-fashion model for a fast fashion IG influencer online boutique?!! How do you go from Valentino to PLT? I HAVE QUESTIONS THAT NEED ANSWERS.”

The Independent has reached out to representatives of Campbell and PLT for comment on this collaboration.

It is worth mentioning that PLT has witnessed significant changes in its leadership recently. Former Love Island winner Molly-Mae Hague, who held the position of creative director, has decided to step back from the role to focus on her newborn daughter, Bambi. Typically, the brand collaborates with influencers and reality TV stars to front their campaigns. Hague, after leaving the Love Island villa in 2019, became the face of PLT and served as its creative director.

In a YouTube video last month, Hague stated, “I am still working with them and doing collections and edits, but I have actually decided to step down as my creative director role.” She explained that she wanted to prioritize this precious time with her first-born child and rearrange her life accordingly. Hague also mentioned that she did not take maternity leave as her work is predominantly phone-based, and the decision to leave the role was made collectively with the brand.

In other news, Naomi Campbell recently announced the birth of her second child, a baby boy, on June 29. She shared a heartwarming photo on Instagram, showing herself, her two-year-old daughter, and the newborn baby boy. Campbell expressed her joy and wrote, “It’s never too late to become a mother” in the caption.
