The Philippine Azkals’ upcoming match against Nepal is not just about ending their poor form but also about reconnecting with their fans, according to veteran defender Daisuke Sato. The team has struggled lately, winning only three out of their last 11 matches in the past year. This loss of form has also resulted in a decline in attention, with the focus now shifting to the Filipinas’ campaign in the Fifa Women’s World Cup. Sato hopes that their match against Nepal will help regain attention for men’s football and mark a new beginning for the Azkals under coach Michael Weiss.
A New Journey
Sato recognizes that the road to regaining relevance in the local football scene will not be easy. The Azkals have faced challenges over the past couple of years, but Sato is optimistic about a fresh start. The upcoming friendlies against Nepal and Chinese-Taipei will serve as a starting point for Weiss’ vision of a competitive team for the joint qualifiers of the World Cup and Asian Cup in November. Despite some key players being sidelined due to injury, the Azkals are determined to turn the tide and put their trajectory back on track.
The Azkals have faced a series of losses, with their last victory coming in December against Brunei in the Asean Football Federation Championship.
