The Queen’s Reading Room Literary Festival at Hampton Court Palace kicked off with a private reception hosted by King Charles, where authors, actors, and literature enthusiasts had the chance to meet and celebrate their love for books. Despite Her Majesty’s delay due to bad weather, the event started with impressive readings from Dame Joanna Lumley and Richard E Grant, who performed Walter de la Mare’s The Listeners and Lewis Carroll’s All In The Golden Afternoon, respectively. Grant, an avid reader and lover of Alice In Wonderland, shared his support for anything that encourages people to read and not just graphic novels. Among the attendees was Gyles Brandreth, who shared a joke with King Charles about his Tudor Rose jumper. Actor and comedian Ben Elton expressed the significant role of the King and Queen’s focus on literature, and author Kate Mosse praised Her Majesty’s passion for reading and women. The Queen’s Reading Room, which started as an Instagram book club and relaunched as a charity in February, partnered with Historic Royal Palaces to produce the festival, with proceeds supporting both charities.
