No timber-clad tower has ever reached such incredible heights.
In Western Australia, a towering architectural masterpiece has received approval from local authorities. If completed, the Charles Street building in South Perth will become the tallest wooden structure in the world.
Perth’s Metro Inner-South Joint Development Assessment Panel has granted Grange Development the green light for this massive project. Named C6, the structure will be made up of a combination of materials, with timber accounting for 42% and reinforced concrete forming the core, according to a report by CNN.
C6’s proposed height of 627 feet and 50 stories far surpasses the current record holder, Wisconsin’s Ascent building, which stands at 284 feet and 25 stories.
Additionally, C6 will outshine Sydney’s upcoming Atlassian Headquarters, set to complete in 2026 at a height of 599 feet. This means that C6 may hold the title of the world’s tallest wooden tower for a few years.
(The completion date for C6 has yet to be announced.)
Both C6 and the Atlassian building will feature a steel exoskeleton combined with laminated timber beams, showcasing a more sustainable construction approach.
In a building proposal submitted to authorities, James Dibble, the director of Grange Development, stated, “We can’t grow concrete.” He referred to C6’s plan as “a new open-sourced blueprint that utilizes hybrid construction methodology to offset the carbon within our built environment, which is the single biggest contributor to climate change,” as reported by CNN.
“This is our opportunity to demonstrate our genuine concern for both the housing crisis and the climate crisis, which the construction industry is currently addressing inadequately,” added Dibble.
In addition to its record-breaking height, the environmentally conscious building will feature a rooftop garden and urban farm. Moreover, residents of the 200+ apartments will have access to 80 fully-electric Tesla Model 3s.
