Actor Ashton Kutcher has resigned as board chair of Thorn, an anti-child trafficking group he co-founded. This move comes in response to backlash Kutcher received for writing a letter of support for his former “That ’70s Show” co-star, Danny Masterson, who was recently convicted of raping two women. In his resignation letter posted on Thorn’s website, Kutcher expressed his desire to prevent his mistake from overshadowing the group’s efforts and the children they serve.
During Masterson’s sentencing hearing, Kutcher and his wife Mila Kunis, along with numerous others, wrote letters of support for leniency. However, Masterson was ultimately sentenced to 30 years to life in prison.
In his letter to the judge, Kutcher praised Masterson as a “role model” and defended his character. Kutcher believed that Masterson was not a threat to society and even trusted him with his own children.
Following criticism, Kutcher and Kunis released a video clarifying that their letters were not intended to undermine the experiences of Masterson’s victims, emphasizing their support for survivors.
In his resignation letter, Kutcher expressed his sincere apology to all victims of sexual violence and everyone at Thorn who he may have hurt. He made this decision after engaging in meaningful conversations with survivors and Thorn’s employees and leadership.
Kutcher, Kunis, and Masterson worked together on “That ’70s Show” and later on the Netflix series “The Ranch,” from which Masterson was fired in 2017 following the rape allegations.
