The Oakland Athletics are currently on track for 116 losses this season, which would put them in the record books as the fifth-worst performance in MLB history. One particular play that exemplifies their struggles comes from Luis Medina.
In a game against the Washington Nationals, a team not known for its dominance in baseball, Medina had an opportunity to make a routine out. Ildemaro Vargas hit a hard grounder right back to Medina, seemingly giving him an easy out. However, Medina’s lack of hustle was evident as he jogged slowly to first base. Even Vargas didn’t give his all in running to first.
But Vargas quickly noticed Medina’s lackluster effort and decided to turn on the jets. Realizing that Vargas was just a couple of steps away from first base, Medina tried to pick up the pace, but it was too late. Vargas beat him to first by a step.
Unfortunately, Vargas’s hustle paid off for the Nationals. He eventually scored, giving his team an early 1-0 lead. That single run proved to be significant as the Nationals went on to win the game 3-2 with a walk-off home run in the bottom of the ninth.
If the Athletics continue at their current pace, they will have the most losses in a single season since the historically bad 2003 Detroit Tigers, who lost 117 games.
It’s clear that the A’s are facing a tough season, and plays like Medina’s lack of effort only contribute to their struggles. They’ll have to find a way to turn things around if they want to avoid setting an unwanted record.
