A remarkable pig named Pigcasso has garnered over $1 million in art sales through her mouth-painted portraits, as revealed by her caretaker.
The celebrated Pigcasso, adopted by animal rights activist Joanne Lefson from South Africa, has commanded prices as high as $26,000 per artwork, as detailed in Lefson’s new book, “Pigcasso: The Million-dollar artistic pig that saved a sanctuary.”
An extract from the book was recently published by The Daily Mail, allowing readers a glimpse into Pigcasso’s journey.
Pigcasso, saved by Lefson from an abattoir as a piglet in 2016, now resides in a sanctuary owned by the dedicated activist. Through her artwork, Pigcasso has managed to generate more than $1 million in funds to support the sanctuary’s operational expenses, including food supplies, staff salaries, veterinary bills, and other necessary costs.
This unique pig creates her masterpieces by gripping a customized brush with her mouth and employing vigorous strokes on canvas, as vividly captured in a 2018 National Geographic video.
Once Pigcasso completes a painting, she adds her personal touch by marking it with her snout, as explained on Lefson’s website.
In 2019, Lefson mentioned in an interview with Reuters that she first discovered Pigcasso’s talent for painting when the piglet would chew and destroy most things in her stall, but handled paintbrushes tenderly.
Lefson devised a creative solution by attaching used toilet rolls to a brush handle, offering it to Pigcasso, who took naturally to waving it using her mouth.
By rewarding Pigcasso with grapes and engaging in one-on-one lessons where Lefson crawled around the barn with a brush in her mouth, the artist pig was taught to paint, as highlighted in the book.
Lefson describes captivating moments when Pigcasso autonomously creates extraordinary shapes such as hearts, initials, and numbers, requiring further artistic contemplation, as documented in the book.
Pigcasso has even received commissions from renowned figures like tennis legend Rafael Nadal and British actor Ed Westwick, as disclosed by Lefson. Her artwork has also been featured on Swatch watch faces, which achieved a remarkable sale of $1,000 each in 2019.
Lefson has not provided a comment at this time, as the request was made outside regular business hours.
“Pigcasso: The Million-dollar artistic pig that saved a sanctuary” is scheduled for release on August 3, as per The Daily Mail, with an October release date on Amazon.
