A suspect linked to the Capitol attack was apprehended near former President Obama’s residence in Washington, DC, on Thursday. Interestingly, former President Trump had shared the address on his Truth Social platform just hours before. A Truth Social account associated with the suspect, Taylor Taranto, shared the article Trump posted and added the comment, “Got them surrounded!” Law enforcement sources informed the New York Times that Taranto’s van contained firearms, ammunition, and materials potentially capable of creating explosives.
According to NBC, Taranto’s social media accounts suggest that he has been living in his van near the Washington jailhouse where several Jan. 6 suspects are being held. He frequently shared conspiracy theories about Obama’s home online and livestreamed his activities on the day of his arrest, mentioning the presence of underground tunnels in the neighborhood. Additionally, CNN reports that Taranto claimed to possess a detonator. It remains unclear whether Obama and his family were present at the time of Taranto’s apprehension by Secret Service officers.
CNN reports that Taranto, who had an outstanding warrant for his involvement in the Capitol attack, has been charged with being a fugitive from justice. Furthermore, Taranto is a defendant in a lawsuit filed in 2021 by the widow of a police officer who tragically took his own life following the attack. The Washington Post states that Erin Smith’s lawyers claimed Taranto handed a cane or crowbar to David Walls-Kaufman, who subsequently struck Jeffrey Smith in the face, leading to Smith’s death nine days later. Walls-Kaufman was arrested and sentenced to two months in prison last year. (For more stories on the Capitol riot, click here.)
