A 34-year-old man is currently in custody on suspicion of setting multiple fires in the Fairfax district since May. Delano Thompson, who was reportedly living in his car, was apprehended on Wednesday and is now held in jail with a bail set at $600,000, as per police and jail records.
According to Detective Roger Allen of the Los Angeles Police Department, Thompson is believed to be responsible for at least eight arson fires. The police were able to identify him as a suspect by reviewing surveillance footage from different blazes, which led them to his vehicle.
In the months of May and June, there were several reports of fires in the Fairfax area, including multiple garage fires that resulted in damage to numerous vehicles. “As we analyzed the incidents, it became clear that we were dealing with clusters, indicating a serious problem,” said Detective Allen regarding the arson investigation.
One of the fires that Thompson is suspected of setting occurred in an outbuilding at a Jewish girls’ high school on Beverly Boulevard. However, the police stated that there is currently no evidence to suggest that the fire was motivated by hate.
Los Angeles Fire Department Captain Erik Scott mentioned that a total of 52 arson suspects have been arrested in the local area within the past six months. He emphasized how these individuals were not only starting fires, but also causing destruction to property and instilling fear within neighborhoods.
